A shower is an area that is frequently wet and dry. This means that your shower tiles are prone to experiencing mouldy or cracked grout. So the question on everyone’s mind...how often should you seal grout in a shower? We’re here to answer just that!

In high traffic areas like your main shower, it is recommended to seal your shower grout every six months. In low traffic areas like your spare bedroom shower that doesn’t get used often, it is recommended to seal the shower grout every two years.

Why do I need to regrout my shower tiles?

Over time, heat and moisture from your shower cause your tiles to expand. Grout between the tiles prevents them from hitting each other. Grout also acts as a waterproof seal to ensure water is kept off your walls and into the drain. Over time, as the grout cracks and breaks down, it loses its ability to do these things. That’s why it is important to regrout your shower tiles and ensure it is completed every six months in high traffic areas.

If you don’t regrout your shower tiles, it may lead to mould, mildew and can even cause water damage to your property.

How to protect your grout

It is inevitable for your shower grout to eventually break due to frequent use of the area, heat and moisture. You can still protect your grout to give it a longer lifespan to get the most out of it. Here are some tips on how to protect your grout.

Turn the bathroom fan on

Most bathrooms have an exhaust fan inbuilt in the light. It is recommended to turn this fan on whilst you are showering. What this does is assist in ventilating the bathroom and lessening the steam. It is also recommended to leave the fan on for another 5-10 minutes once your finish showering to get rid of the built-up moisture.

Wipe up any water

After your shower, it is recommended to grab a towel and wipe up any remaining water beads from the tiles. This eliminates extra moisture and dries the area up faster.

Clean your shower

It is recommended to frequently clean your shower to avoid any mould or mildew build-up that may be occurring. This will elongate the lifespan of your grout as well as keep it clean.

I was a bit skeptical at first, thinking this won't fix the leaking showers as the water was starting to destroy the underflooring under the house, so I read some of the reviews and decided to give them a try. Vivien returned my calls within the same day and booked in Sam to do the Job. They were both amazing. The result was also perfect.... the floor under the shower under the house is bone dry. Sam, you are a gentleman and hard worker, Thanks for fixing both of our showers. Vivien, you are a gem, Thanks for looking after this and organising everything. Most importantly, thank you for fixing the problem and prolonging the use of the existing bathrooms. I used Sabaseal to reseal and regrout 2 shower recesses where the grout after 25 years was wearing thin or missing (mould was also becoming a problem) putting my shower at risk of water damage.
