Australian Waterproofing Standards

Are you aware of the set of standards given by the Australian Government for waterproofing the wet areas? 

The standard for waterproofing the wet areas of a building is known as Australian Standard 3740 or AS 3740. This standard provides a set of requirements that the residential buildings must adhere to. The Australian Building Code and Australian Standards (AS 3740-1994) specify the minimum criteria for bathroom waterproofing. All bathrooms in Australia must meet the following requirements:

Areas to be waterproofed:

• The entire shower are must be waterproofed. In case of a wet bathroom, the whole floor has to be waterproofed.
• The bathrooms installed above the ground level or the ones made of plywood, timber or particleboards must be completely waterproofed.

Specifications of walls:

• The shower walls need to be waterproofed up to at least 1800 mm if it is on the ground floor.
• For a corner shower, both the walls that intersect at a vertical angle must be waterproofed to a minimum of 1800mm.
• The walls enclosing the bathroom must be waterproofed to a minimum of 150mm.
• The walls of a wet bathroom have to be waterproofed up to at least 1500mm. This also applies to the walls of the shower space in the wet bathroom.

Specifications for hobs: 

• The hob or step down onto the bathroom floor must be waterproofed up to at least 100mm.
